Title
EPM handle
Description
English: Fragment of a medieval copper alloy processional cross, comprising a heavily cast and crudely engraved robed figurine of the Virgin, standing on a rectangular-sectioned flaring plinth with ribbed mouldings, and with a fragment of the flat-sectioned supporting arm at the base. Incised lines define the the covering of the head, and the eyes, nose and mouth. Deeper grooves accentuate the arms and hand clasped to the breast, the folds of the robe and the feet. The remains of an incised pattern on the face of what remains of the arm comprise a chevron within a V above fragment of further oblique lines echoing the V-shape. Extant height 102mm. Width 20mm. Thickness 15mm (at plinth). Weighs 97.35g.

The arrangement of the complete cross and its branches would have resembled that of an example in the British Museum (Carter 2009, plate 3). c.1450 - c.1500.

This object was originally described as a post-medieval unidentified object in 2003 (by KH) but has subsequently been reidentified and the entry rewritten (by SA).

Found with a late 18th-century coin (NMS-F1D1).
