Superbase Misawa (Japan), 27 October 1994. Another special Orion: an EP-3E 'ARIES II'. This signals intelligence Orion looks terrible in these 'colours', but I was delighted to see it. 156511 / PR-32 (VQ-1 'World Watchers') became world news on 1 April 2001 when a Chinese Shenyang J-8II fighter crashed into it near Hainan Island, China. The J-8II crashed into the sea killing the pilot. The P-3 was heavily damaged and barely made it to Hainan Island, where it made an unauthorized emergency landing. This resulted in a dispute between the US and China. The EP-3E was flown back to the US aboard a An-124 3 months later. 'Funny' fact: during the incident at Hainan, the EP-3E was back in the nice old grey and white colours. :( |
