El Pro Secretario de la Presidencia del Uruguay, Dr. Diego Cánepa y el embajador de Estados Unidos, David Nelson sellan la firma del convenio con un fuerte apretón de manos. Estados Unidos y Uruguay firman nueva modificación del convenio para mejorar la cooperación en la lucha contra las drogas El Embajador David D. Nelson, en representación del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos de América, y el Prosecretario Diego Cánepa, en representación del Gobierno del Uruguay, firmaron un convenio de cooperación por el cual Estados Unidos aportará fondos para ayudar a Uruguay en la lucha contra las drogas. El Embajador Nelson elogió este acuerdo como "un testimonio de la excelente cooperación en la lucha contra las drogas entre Uruguay y los Estados Unidos". La Junta Nacional de Drogas trabajó en estrecha colaboración con la Dirección General de Represión del Tráfico Ilícito de Drogas para determinar el uso más eficaz de los recursos para reducir la producción, procesamiento, tráfico ilícito, tránsito ilícito y abuso de drogas, especialmente narcótico, en Uruguay. La Dirección General de Represión del Tráfico Ilícito de Drogas (DGRTID) recibirá 48.000 dólares para comprar un sistema de alta tecnología diseñado específicamente para mejorar sus capacidades analíticas para detectar y detener a los traficantes de drogas. La Junta Nacional de Drogas (JND) recibirá 25.000 dólares para implementar acciones que fortalezcan la estrategia de reducción de la demanda, en acciones que implicaran la realización de encuestas nacionales, impresión y difusión de los resultados sobre el consumo de drogas entre otras. El objetivo de estés proyectos es ampliar el conocimiento del Gobierno de Uruguay respecto del consumo de drogas con el fin de determinar mejor su estrategia en la reducción de la demanda.
