Summary
[edit]Description |
"On the banks of the river, not far from the town, stands an ancient round tower of brick. Within it are the remains of a spiral staircase, and the top was originally surmounted by a battlement. It was for some time used as a toll house, when the custom of the river was levied by the prior, and was also used as a prison for the jurisdiction of the Cathedral. In 1378 it was conveyed to the use of the city, by whom it was rebuilt in its present form in 1390. It is now going fast into decay, but still presents a most picturesque appearance on the river bank." ? One of Norwich's Boom Towers; and not the partially-surviving Cow Tower, Norwich. |
