Sorry about the quality of the photographs … access was blocked by barriers.

When I was at school it was never mentioned during our history classes that anyone other than combatants had died during the Easter Rising in 1916. It was mentioned in passing that a teacher from our school had been shot in the leg while cycling near Baggot Street [ I am not even sure if that was a true story]. It was, therefore, with great surprise that I discovered that many civilians had been killed or injured during the rising.

Christina Caffrey, at 22 months the youngest victim of the Rising, was shot in her mother's arms at the door of her house in Church Street. She was buried in an unmarked plot in Glasnevin that is now traversed by a walkway to the republican monument. Chrissie Caffrey was not alone in being forgotten. Joe Duffy in his book “Children Of The Revolution” has identified 40 children under the age of 16 who died in the fighting in Easter Week - all of whom have been written out of history, or never included in the narrative, whether of glorious sacrifice or the triumph of arms.
