Title |
EARLY MEDIEVAL BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: Early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy saucer brooch, now incomplete, but still a large and highly decorated example of this type of brooch, dating to the5th-6th century AD. The damaged upcurving saucer edge has a depth of 7mm. The inside walls are undecorated, but the base of the saucer has shallow chip-carved decoration with very slight traces of gilding on the decorated surface. The central area of the saucer features a raised slightly concave trianglular shape, punctuated by with three incised lines. This is enclosed by a circular border divided into three sections. These are filled with curvilinear, possibly zoomorphic designs in Salin's Style I. The lugs for the pin mounting and traces of the catchplate are present but the pin is missing
