18 E. ANNAB1L & CO.'S BEETS. T FOR THE TABLE The soil best suited for the culture of the Beet is that which is rather light, provided it is thoroughly enriched with manure. If wanted very early, sow in hot beds and transplant; but tfor main crop sow in the spring as soon as the ground becomes fit to work, in drills about' eigh- teen iDches apart and two inches deep. For winter use the turnip varieties may be sown as late ;as June. When the plants have attained three or four inches, thin out so that they stand five *or six inches apart. Keep free from weeds by frequently hoeing and hand weeding, if necessary Before freezing weather sets in. the roots may bo stored in a cellar or in pits as potatoes, if dry •earth is thrown over them before the stra w and earth covering is put on it insures their keeping ♦ hver winter. Be very careful not to bruise them in handling. One ounce of seed to 50 feet of drill, 5 and 6 pounds to the acre. riSxtra Early Egyp- tian—The earliest variety grown and very valuable on ' bhat account. Pkt Sc; oz 10c: i lb 20c; f.b 60c. yf Eclipse—An im- proved extra early sort. Tops small, -dark red, shading- 'to green on outside. Roots nearly round \with small tap roots and very small col- lar. Pkt 5c; oz 10c; i.lb 20c;lb 60c. * Dewing's Blood Turnip—An excel- lent red turnip beet, .•about a week earli- er than the blood i:urnip; flesh rich in oolor, tender and t^weet. Pkt 5c: oz I 0c; i lb 20c; lb 00c. J^Extra Early Bas- za.no—An early good loeet, tender and Juicy, flesh white -and rose,when sown late, keeps late in winter.
