Title
Dyed Roman needle fragment
Description
English: Incomplete Roman needle. The head of the needle has a flattened and expanded with a counter-sunk rectangular eye that is 7.48mm long. The shaft of the needle is circular in section and has an 'L' shaped break that occurred in antiquity. The object has been dyed green, which indicates a 1st or 2nd century date (Crummy 1983, 65). The surface is smooth and glossy. The surviving length is 53.92mm, it is 3.94mm wide across the head and weighs 0.85g. Examples of needles with flattened heads are known from South Shields (Allason-Jones & Miket, 1984, 67 nos. 268-273).
