Summary
[edit]DescriptionDutchmans Pipe (Aristolochia Gigantea) (50854680352).jpg |
A large flower, about 0.5m across! Dutchmans pipe is a robust twisting climber that occurs naturally in regions from Panama to Brazil. It has evolved an ingeneous way to get pollinated, making flies do it. Attracted by a smell like rotting meat, the insects climb down to the base of the bloom. They are stopped from climbing out by downward facing hairs. After the insects brush against the stigma, the flower stops producing scent and releases its pollen onto the captive flies. The downward facing hairs then relax and the flies excape to pollinate another flower. Photographed in the Peter Black Conservatory, Victoria Esplanade, Palmerston North. |
