[edit]Dutch Arms Which Have Come Down Through the Years. Three Dutch Coats of Arms are among those that have come through the years. Polhemus is one of them. The Rev. Johannes Theodorus Polhemus sailed from the Netherlands into the Bay of New Amsterdam in 1654, precisely two centuries and a half ago, and stands as a forerunner of the American Polhemuses. The late Henry D. Polhemus was the last of the male line in Brooklyn. Two sisters now have a right to the arms and the crest of the old Dutch clergyman who was the final pastor of the Flatbush Church. They are Miss R. A. Polhemus, of the Buckingham Hotel, Manhattan, and Mrs. Courtlandt P. Dixon (M. Louise Polhemus), of 52 West Forty-ninth street.
The Polhemus arms comprise:
Quarterly - First and fourth: Azure, a lion passant or; a canon of the last. Second and third; Argent, a fesse gules between a wheel sable in chief, and a heart of the second in base, Crest, a demi-lion holding a wheel of the shield.
People
[edit]- Reverend Johannes Theodorus Polhemus (1598-1676)
- Courtlandt Palmer Dixon (1853-1922)
- Maria Louisa Polhemus (1855-1941)
