Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Heavy winds pushed large clouds of dust over the Red Sea in mid-March 2017.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on March 20. At that time, intense waves of dust and sand billowed over Sudan and Eritrea (western shore) and the Red Sea on its way to Saudi Arabia. Additional streaks of dust blow across Saudi Arabia. The sand and dust is so thick that it hides the Earth from view in many areas. Clouds hang over the blowing dust in the southern section of the Red Sea.

The storm was named “Madar” by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection (PME). The sand originated in Libya and was pushed to the northeast by winds exceeding 55 mph (88.6 km/h) over much of the region. Sand and dust storms are a common occurrence in this region, especially during the unsettled, windy spring and fall seasons. The particulates carried in such storm can cause or worsen respiratory illness in people and livestock.
