The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image that morning.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On March 31, 2017, thick plumes of dust stretched hundreds of kilometers from northern Mexico into the U.S. states of Texas and New Mexico. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image that morning. While the dust passed over White Sands National Monument, the source appeared to mainly be farmland near the Mexican town of Janos. Black borderlines have been overlain on the image to delineate political boundaries. The country of Mexico lies in the southwest section of the image. To its north is New Mexico and to the east is Texas, both in the United States. White Sands National Monument is found in the Tularosa basin of New Mexico. Measuring 275 square miles, the desert is the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. Normally easily seen from space, it is almost obscured by the tan of the sandstorm.
