Summary
[edit]DescriptionDust storm in Afghanistan (MODIS 2016-10-02).jpg |
English: Heavy clouds of dust and sand covered northeastern Afghanistan in late September 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on September 30.
A wide swath of dust covered parts of Afghanistan (south) and Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan (northwest to northeast). The heaviest dust and sand lies over Afghanistan, where it takes on an appearance similar to chocolate milk, spreading thickly across the lowlands and extending into the valleys of the Hindu Kush Mountains. Bands of cloud at the northern edge of the image suggest that a storm system may be the source of strong wind which is responsible for lifting the dust from the arid, sandy landscape and lofting it into the atmosphere. |
