Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A broad wave of dust covered the Gulf of Aden in early September 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of dust moving over the Gulf of Aden on September 9. Clouds across Yemen suggest an area of disturbed weather may have kicked up strong winds, lifting dust from the Arabian Peninsula and carrying it southward to reach the Horn of Africa. According to Weather Underground, winds over Aden, Yemen reached 20 mph (30 km/h) on September 9. Aden sits on the coast of Yemen near the left (west) side of this image. Dust does not always blow in just one direction; complicated wind patterns can carry dust across the Gulf in both directions. While strong winds were recorded in Yemen on September 9, winds at Bender Qassim International Airport, Somalia, also registered as high as 20 mph (30 km/h). Bender Qassim sits on the coast of Somalia, under the heavier veil of dust.
