Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Strong winds blew across the Gobi Desert on March 4-5, 2016, kicking up a massive dust storm. On March 8, four days after the start of the storm, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASAs Terra satellite flew over eastern Russia and captured this true-color image of dust blowing across the Sea of Okhotsk and the Kuril Islands.

The Gobi Desert sits on the China-Mongolia border and is one of the worlds most abundant sources of dust. Dust storms tend to be most frequent in the unsettled weather of springtime, especially in March and April.

The Kuril Islands are a volcanic archipelago that run from Japan, in the south, to Kamchatka, Russia. To reach the Kuril Islands, the Gobi Desert dust crossed eastern Mongolia, northern China and southeastern Russia, a trip of about 3,770 km (2,343 mi).
