Durga Mahishasuramardini, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Durga Mahishasuramardini in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Description from the museum reads: "Durga Mahishasuramardini. 1700-1800. Nepal. Gilded copper alloy. Purchased with the Stella Kramrisch Fund for Indian and Himalayan Art, 2012-58-1. The eighteen-armed Hindu goddess Durga plants one foot firmly on Mahishasura, the buffalo demon who threatened to overthrow the balance of the cosmos. His buffalo head lies nearby. The goddess's lion vehicle, claw drawn and fangs bared, supports her other foot. Although Durga is presented here as calmly triumphant, her attributes and gestures emphasize her fierce nature. One hand cradles a ritual cup made from a human skull and she wears an apron woven of bones and a garland of human skulls. The sculpture also includes the ending of the incident, when the demon recognizes Durga as the ultimate power and honors her. This is shown by Mahishasura emerging from the vanquished buffalo's neck in human form."
