Dupondius of Commodus. Obverse view.
Description
English: A complete, Roman, struck or hammered, brass, dupondius of Commodus (177-192AD). Obverse:Radiate head right. Inscription: (LAVREL) COMM[ODVS] AVG Reverse: Libertas standing left holding pileus (conical hat) and a sceptre with 'SC' in the field. Insciption: (LIB)ERTAS AVG [TRP VI IMP III COS III P P SC] Mint name:Rome. Reece Period 9. Die axis: 6 o'clock. This coin is in very fine condition only slightly worn, struck slightly off centre. The flan is 'squared off' and there is a dark brown glossy patina and some lighter brown rusty coloured patches probably as a result of being found in water logged conditions. This coin is likely to date to 181AD. Ref. Roman Coins & their values II, David R. Sear, Spink 2002, page 406 no. 5840 and RIC 315. This coin is 24.68mm long, 19.86mm wide, 3.83mm thick, diameter 24.68mm and weighs 9.3g.
