Summary

[edit]
Description

NPS/Patrick Myers The Great Sand Dunes have been a landmark for people throughout countless generations. The tallest dune rises over 750 feet (230m) - taller than the Denver skyline - marking the way for early travelers looking for mountain passes to the east. Just as the wind has gathered sand in this passageway, diverse groups of people have been drawn here. While the area's abundant wildlife and plant life physically sustained people of the past, these giant dunes have always been a treasured place for people of all ages to play, explore, recreate, and reflect.

Photo taken May 4, 2018 after a fresh dusting of snow on the mountains.
