NPS/Patrick Myers One of the steepest and most rugged mountain ranges in the United States, the Sangre de Cristos rise from grasslands to over 14,000 feet (4,300m) in a very short distance. Because of their inaccessibility, these mountains have remained mostly wild and unaltered by human activity. In 1993, Congress established the 219,776 acre Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area to protect the range's wild character and diverse ecosystems. Without the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, there would be no dunes here. The Sangres not only supply part of the sand in the dunefield, they also form a mountain barrier to trap sand that would otherwise blow on through to the prairies of eastern Colorado. When you come to experience the Great Sand Dunes Wilderness, plan some extra time to explore Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, part of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area. You'll discover surprisingly lush forests, meadows, streams, lakes, and alpine tundra only steps away from the sand! |
