Summary

[edit]
Description

This is the third railway station to stand on this site. The architect was the London-born Scot, George Troup who emigrated to New Zealand in 1884 and became the first official architect of the colony's railway system. It's in the Flemish Renaissance style and is constructed from two types of local Otago stone: a dark volcanic stone from Kokonga and a lime stone from the Oamura district. The columns are of Aberdeen granite. Although the design of the station was completed in the 1890's, work didn't commence until 1903. The station was opened in 1906 by Sir Joseph Ward who had recently become Prime Minister. A year later New Zealand was granted Dominion status.

In later life George Troup was a Wellington's City Councillor, serving as mayor from 1927 to 1931. He stood unsuccessfully for the parliamentary seat of Wellington North in 1931, was knighted in 1937 and eventually died, aged 80, in 1941.
