Here's a quote from a press release from that splendid fellow, Brian Haley, at the time of this photo, one of my fellow Labour councillors and Haringey's "Cabinet" Member for Environment & Conservation.

" We have a good track record for removing dumping within twenty-four hours, and we are confident that our tougher line against flytippers and improved use of CCTV will help us cut illegal dumping in Haringey". (Source : Haringey Council press release 10 July 2007: The true cost of fly-tipping.)

So, on 14 July 2007, I thought immediately about CCTV when I saw rubbish dumped in this regular spot in Chesnut Road, N17. As you can see, it was right next to a Haringey closed circuit TV camera ! Surely a perfect place to improve our good track record, and take a tough line to tackle the problem.

Dear Councillor Stanton,

[...] I can confirm that officers have been monitoring the area and to date have not found any evidence to take enforcement action. The officers checked the CCTV camera and unfortunately the camera was not positioned at an angle which could identify the offender." ____________

Tsk Tsk. A stretch of pavement is regularly used to dump rubbish. But the CCTV camera a few metres away is at an angle which can't identify the dumpers. How disappointing.

But wait a moment! As the photo shows, the camera can be panned. So I wrote back asking if could be adjusted to include the pavement where there's regular dumping?
