Summary
[edit]DescriptionDumbarton Rock 1 (4375282714).jpg |
The recorded history of Dumbarton Castle stretches back 1,500 years to when it was known as Alt Clut 'Rock of the Clyde'. The volcanic rock has two peaks: White Tower Crag and The Beak. Nothing remains from the Dark Age fortress, and little from the medieval castle: just the Portcullis Arch, Guard House, and the bottom storey of the Wallace Tower. The gun batteries, Governor's House, French Prison and powder magazine date from the refortifying of the rock after the 1715 Jacobite Rising. See where this picture was taken. [?] |
