Summary
[edit]DescriptionDuke of Yorks Cinema, Brighton - geograph.org.uk - 844186.jpg |
English: Duke of Yorks Cinema, Brighton. Taken from a different angle from Simon's photo 41928 this shows the can-can legs for which the building is now well-known. These were originally placed on the Moulin Rouge cinema in Headington, Oxford and were sculpted by John Buckley, sculptor of the 'Oxford Shark' 21604 and commissioned by Bill Heine, the owner of both the house with the shark and the Moulin Rouge. The previous owner of the Moulin Rouge had failed to get planning permission to put up a turning windmill on the grounds that this was misleading, as there were no can-can dancers. Bill took over the cinema in 1980 and put up an enormous pair of can-can legs. When the planners predictably objected on the same grounds, Bill promptly changed the name of the cinema to "Not the Moulin Rouge", stating that a pair of can-can legs could not advertise anything which was patently not the Moulin Rouge, and eventually got away with it. Bill subsequently bought the Duke of Yorks cinema in Brighton and when the Headington cinema closed in 1991 the legs were transferred to Brighton. The cinema is no longer owned by Bill Heine but the legs remain! |
