Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Between Groenehoek and the Klaverbladdreef in Wilrijk (Antwerp) stands in a meadow a German command pillbox from World War II.

In this area an airport was built in 1939, which was later set up by the Germans as a fake airport with wooden sheds and fake aircraft to mislead the enemy scouts. The pillbox is the only construction of the airfield that has been preserved. It is a truncated cone-shaped construction in reinforced concrete with a single chamber. The workspace is at the ground floor, but the base is five meters deep in the ground. The walls are one and a half meter thick.

On the eastern edge of the Deurne airport stands an almost identical pillbox. These two pillboxes, with their typical conical shape, are unique in Europe.
