Summary
[edit]DescriptionDufour-Ballabey motor truck of the Great St Bernard Hospice (1904).jpg |
English: This is the first motor vehicle owned by the Augustinian fathers of the Great St Bernard Hospice, Valais, Switzerland, identified as a 1904 Dufour, soon named Dufour-Ballabey This trucks were built in very limited numbers by Dufour & Tissot, engine makers, of Nyon, Vaud, Switzerland.
This picture was taken 11 September, 1905 in Martigny, Valais, prior of what became the first climb of a motor vehicle to the summit of the Great St Bernard pass. The journey took about two hours. While the person standig next to the truck is not identified, the gentlemen on the vehicle are from left to right: Father Antoine Pellouchoud (chauffeur), engineer Ribordy, abbey provost Mgr. Théophile Bourgeois, member of the Valais state council (government) Joseph Kuntschen, sr. (wearing a bowler), Étienne Ballabey, chief engineer and compagnon of the Dufour factory, Maurice de Preux, chief of the Valais cantonal police and the canons Studer and Jules Darbellay. |
