Notes
English: This figure might come from a region inhabited by various Bantu-speaking groups, who lived more or less independently of one another. They were grouped together under the ethnic term "Lulua" during the colonial period. Figures of the "Lulua" have spiritual and decorative functions. They refer to the ancestors who give protection to their descendants and help to happiness and beauty. The patterns show scarifications, which also decorated people's bodies in the past. For example, small figures like these were placed next to a baby's bed to protect it from all evil.
