Summary

[edit]
Description

Last week USAID Mission Director, Alex Dickie, visited our Community Care Program in Boane. The objective of the Community Care Program is to strengthen the ability of communities to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This is done by a variety of ways such as following up on patients and their families, accompanying them to the hospital and health facilities, reminding them of the appointments and medication taking times, visiting them, giving them social and nutritional advise and above all moral support.

Some of the most important beneficiaries of this project are the orphaned and vulnerable children which are left unattended when affected directly or indirectly by the epidemic. Trained activistas of the associations working under our project such as AMODEFA in Boane have been actively involved in activities with children in the area. They help registering children without documents, taking them to the hospital when necessary, giving guidance and integrating them in the schools.

Community-based HIV services also include tuberculosis detection and effective referrals to facility-based health and social sector services.
