Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drumadoon sill This is a geological sill, this means its a load of igneous rock that has been squeezed in between two beds of rock. In this case basalt has formed a sill, then silica rich rock (or acid rock) has been forced though the basalt. So the top and bottom of the sill is Basalt while the middle is Quartz feldspar porphyry (QFP). This Porphyritic texture means that the feldspar has cooled first in the magma chamber deep down forming large crystals, then the QFP has been forced up. The other crystals are small as they have had to cool quickly. The surrounding bed rock has eroded away revealing the sill. The gap in the middle is the remains of a later Dike (igneous intrusion that is discordant to the beds). The sill has cooled to form vertical jointing.
