Summary

Description

Scholars Townhouse Hotel, Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland

English: Monument in memory of Éamonn Ceannt who was a pupil of the Christian Brothers School in Drogheda (now Scholars Townhouse Hotel). Created by Yoram Drori in 2015 and erected left of the main entrance to the hotel. The plaque reads as follows:

In Memory of

Éamonn Ceannt

(21 September 1881 – 8 May 1916)

Member of the Provisional Government of Ireland 1916
Signatory of Poblacht na hEireann– The Proclamation of the Provisional
Government

Éamonn Ceannt and his family moved from Ballymoe in Galway to
Ardee in Louth in 1883 and received his education at the Christian
Brothers School in this building, now–

Scholars Townhouse Hotel.
In May 1915, the Irish Republican Brotherhoods Military Council, being
made up of Joseph Plunkett, Sean MacDiarmada and Éamonn Ceannt,
began plans for a rebellion. Ceannt was one of the seven men to sign
the Proclamation for the Irish Republic and was appointed Director of
Communications. He was made commandant of the 4th Battalion of the
Volunteers, and during the Rising was stationed at the South Dublin
Union, with more than one hundred men under his command, his
second-in-command being

Cathal Brugha, and W. T. Cosgrave.

Following the surrender of the volunteers he was arrested, put on
trial and then executed at Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin.

Written hours before his execution from Cell 88 Kilmanhaim Gaol, on
May 7, 1916.

“Ireland has shown she is a nation. This generation can claim to have
raised sons as brave as any that went before. And in the years to
come Ireland will honour those who risked all for her honour at
Easter 1916”

Unveiled June 2015 by
Mayor of Drogheda Mr Kevel Callan
