English: Dressed for a day on the beach? The location here is the path from the car park to Holkham Beach, near Wells-next-the-Sea Lifeboat Station.
Every year there is a Tamil pilgrimage to the Christian shrine at Walsingham. This is traditionally followed by an afternoon / evening on the beach. In 2001 fights broke out resulting in several stabbings. As a result the event is very heavily policed, resulting in the strange sight of groups of black-clad officers alongside brightly dressed Tamil families playing on the sands. The police helicopter was also out, disturbing the peace, and cars containing young men were being pulled off the road to be searched, with metal detectors set up for the purpose. |
