Title
dress pin head (profile)
Description
English: Incomplete silver gilt dress pin, with a hollow spherical head made up of two soldered hemispheres with six applied filigree circlets separated by granules in each hemisphere. There are five that form a row around the circumference of the upper hemisphere which is topped by the sixth circlet with a central pointed knop that is 2 mm in diameter. Another five allign around the lower hemisphere with the sixth at the base around the drawn pin shaft which has been inserted into the head. The head is still heavily gilt with wear mainly in the centre of the circlets which are most exposed. The pin shaft is quadrangular in section and made of silver wire with some gilding surviving but tapering from 2.4 mm in thickness to 1.4 mm at the broken edge, as only 10 mm of it remains.

The pin dates from the 16th Century and is a type commonly reported through the Treasure Act 1996.

See CORN-6B3E07 for a more complete but damaged example of a dress pin with similar applied decoration that is dated from the 16th century.
