Title |
dress pin (pin) |
||
Description |
English: Silver gilt dress pin with a spherical head with applied filigree ornament on two hemispheres joined by a band made up of two twisted parallel silver wires. On each hemisphere are six applied twisted circles which each contain a four-petalled flower around a central knop. These circles alternate with five smaller circlets surrounded by three knops and there is a large knop dividing each circle from the next and surrounding the circle at the top and that at the bottom of the head. Within the top circle there is one large central knop with four smaller knops around it; and within the bottom circle there are three knops around the pin shaft which forms the centre of the circle. The drawn shaft is broken off about 11 mm below the head. Gilding survives throughout but some areas of the head are also blackened by surface silver oxide.
See 2004 T94 (TAR 2004, pp.132 & 292, Fig.287, No.287) for a similar example from Wilmington in Devon, which is dated from the 16th century. |
