Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawings by Adolphe Bouchet of 1st century CE Roman frescos found in Herculaneum in the House of the Stags depicting winged geniuses dancing and playing musical instruments.

Translated full plate description: "A Genie blows simultaneously into the two pipes of a double flute, as used to be done, either when the two flutes were entirely separate, or when they were united in a single mouthpiece (3). On these two flutes, you can see the little funnels added to the holes, which were plugged with the fingers to vary the tones; but the child makes no use of them, and plays, as it were, empty, i.e., he only produces two sounds at most (4). Another child dances with the first to the sound of this music, holding a small staff on his shoulder.

"Of the two Geniuses in the second frame, one carries on his left shoulder a stick that grows and perhaps splits towards the end; it's either a pendulum or a kind of rattler. His companion plays the lyre and dances at the same time: for the ancients, dancing was just one part of music (5). - Louis Barré, 1870
