Title
Drawing of terret ring
Description
English: A cast copper alloy simple terret (length: 40mm; width:58mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 36.97g) with an oval hoop and sub-circular or D-shaped cross-section, with a simple but substantial neck moulding at the junction with the bar which protrude inwards. An unusual and rather abnormal feature (not yet parallelled) is the additional prong/ bar that begins to stretch out by 12mm where the strapping would have wrapped around the attachment bar of the terret. Therefore, if not a casting flaw, the use of this feature may have been to cover the terret bar fixing.

The overall condition of the terret is poor. It is fairly worn particularly along the top of the hoop and along the attachment bar, where there are substantial pockets of bronze disease. The artefact has a green/ brown patina.

Various parallels for the general simple and plain form of the terret were found at Danebury during the 1969-1978 and 1979-1988 excavations (Cunliffe, 1984, pages 342 & 345, fig 7.6, ref no 1.36; Cunliffe & Poole, 1991, pages 329 & 332, Ref no 1.96); at Llyn Cerrig Bach in Anglesey (Kilbride-Jones, 1980); and at Glastonbury, Somerset (Wainwright, 1979). Fragments of casting moulds for making similar terrets were found during excavations at the Iron Age settlement, Gussage All Saints (Wainwright, 1979, pages 134-137, fig 102 & 103). This terret is likely to date to the 1st century AD.
