Every change from light to shadow which is easy for you to seemeans also a change in hue which is not so easy to see, but faith-ful use of the lenses will discover the rule that if the light side ofany object is warm the shadow side will appear cold, and if the lightside is cold the shadow side will be warm. It is evident that thestrongest effect of local color will not be seen in either the strong-est light or the deepest shadow, but between the two, and nearthe dividing line of light and shade. It is impossible to produce a vital effect without conforming tothis law of contrast between the masses. Understanding thelaw will aid you to see the changes from warm to cold whichappear on objects that are of one unvaried local color. 84. You must use your judgment in your use of the lens todetermine the effect of the first painting, for you can not followthe lens exactly if a detail, such as a painted design, comes ineither the mass of the light or the shadow.
