In the book "Eros Visible Art, Sexuality and Antiquity in Renaissance Italy," this image is attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti known as Salai. "Annunicating Angel" (Angelo Inacrnato) c 1513. Drawing has also been attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

Art, Sexuality and Antiquity in Renaissance Italy", James Granthum Turner, 2017.[1]


In this book the details of this image are given as:

"Here attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti known as Salai, "Annunicating Angel" (Angelo Inacrnato) c 1513. Black chalk, electronically 'cleaned' to remove staining, 26.8 x 19.7 cm. Private collection, Los Angeles."[1]

This drawing has also been attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.


It has been commented that "A small pinhole at the top centre of this Angelo Incarnato sheet suggests that it was tacked up in the studio."[1]

The drawing first emerged in 1991.[2]

It has also been commented that "...the Oxford St john the Baptist... ...matches the 'angel' drawing in outline...".[1] There is a painting of St John the Baptist by the studio of Leonardo in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
