Popham & Pouncey 1950 Of the scenes from the life of Christ surrounding the bowl of the chalice, those visible are, from l. to r.: the 'Resurrection of Lazarus' (?), the 'Entry into Jerusalem', the 'Agony in the Garden', the 'Betrayal of Christ', 'Christ before Herod (or Pilate)', and the 'Flagellation'. In niches round the knop four standing male figures are visible, the second and third of whom are S. Peter with his keys and S.John (or Christ) holding a chalice. The traditional attribution to Mantegna was retained until the exhibition of 1895 when Colvin, in the 'Guide', described this drawing as being Venetian and more particularly of the school of Murano. This seems to be a correct diagnosis and it only remains to note a general resemblance in taste and style to the large canvas of the 'Virgin and Child with the Doctors of the Church', signed by Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d'Alemagna and dated 1446, in the Venice Academy (Van Marle, xvii, fig. 7). A slightly later date is indicated for the drawing by traces of Squarcionesque influence in the folds of the drapery and by the likelihood that fashion in the applied arts lagged behind that in painting.
