As suggested by Bober (1957, p. 72) this opening derives its subjects from scenes nos. LXXIV-LXXV/190-4 of Trajan's Column (K. Lehmann-Hartleben, 'Die Trajanssäule', Berlin and Leipzig, 1926 and Settis et al., 'La colonna Traiana', Turin, 1988, nos. 126 -left hand page- and 127 - right hand page), but the two figures on the far left of Aspertini's drawing are not included on the relief, nor does the kneeling naked suppliant on the right and Trajan is sitting on a podium, not standing. She also believes that this opening is a variation of the scene represented on the lower tier of f. 1898,1123.3.34 (Bober 34v-35; a printing mistake on p. 72 indicates f. 33v-34).
