Bober observes that this opening derives from scene XXI/49-50 of Trajan's Column (K. Lehmann-Hartleben, 'Die Trajanssäule', Berlin and Leipzig, 1926 and Settis et al., 'La colonna Traiana', Turin, 1988, no. 24) and that they are the continuation of the image described on f. 1898,1123.3.25 of this sketch-book (Bober 1957, p. 66). Agosti and Farinella believe that for all these scenes (including f. 1898,1123.3.30 of this sketch-book) Aspertini based himself on anonymous engravings of the school of Raphael (Bartsch XIV, 203-205) and they use this example for their argument that Aspertini did not base himself at all on the actual Column for the London sketch-book, but that he used his previous Codex Wolfegg and other artists' sources (see Agosti-Farinella 1984, pp. 403-6, n.11).
