One of two drawings on the Château de Charleval drawn by Du Cerceau for this album; see 1972,U.793 for comment on whole series. Charleval was commissioned by King Charles IX in 1569/70. Excavations works had started and parts of the building were being erected when the St Bartholomew's Day massacre (1572) occured; work was subsequently slowed down and the death of the King in 1574 put a definite end to the project. The fact that Du Cerceau insisted on reproducing a building that was, for the most part, a project (he drew two meticulous plans of the château for this album and did five plates for the engraved version, even though by then construction had been halted for good) leaves some to suggest he might have been the architect.
