The attribution was made by Ella Reitsma. The composition is very similar to another drawing of a wallflower by Herolt, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig. The butterfly is a South American member of the Lycaenidae family. Its unusual but dramatic pose, in which it appears to dive towards the flower, is uncharacteristic of Herolt's mother Maria Sibylla Merian, with whom she worked very closely.
