Notes |
Entry from J.Harvey's commentary to the Folio Society facsimile of the Surinam Album (London, 2006): 'The bird illustrated in this watercolour is the Eurasian Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis (Linnaeus). Although the plumage and patterning are accurate, the bill is incorrectly shown as curved (it should be straight) and the feet are rather heavy. A native to Europe, North Africa and Asia it may seem strange to see this bird included as part of a collection of watercolours on the natural history of Surinam. There are a number of possible explanations. Perhaps it was added as a purely decorative feature. It is also possible that goldfinches were taken as caged songbirds to Surinam in the 17th century and later escaped. This species is now found in Brazil as an introduced species. The bird is resting on the branch of a fig tree (see also watercolour 33), which has one fruit shown in cross section.' Ella Reitsma considers this to be a collaborative work between Maria Sibylla Merian and her elder daughter, Johanna Herolt, with Maria Sibylla drawing the bird and butterfly and the daughter producing the fig branch, see E. Reitsma, 'Maria Sibylla Merian & Daughters: Women of Art and Science', Amsterdam / Los Angeles, 2008, p.221, fig.163 |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
