Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drainage ditch on Penny Moor, New Forest. Penny Moor lies within the medieval earthwork that encloses the Bishop of Winchester's Purlieu, a rather wet area of bog and heath between Lyndhurst and Beaulieu. Ditches like this were dug in the 1960s in an effort to improve the land for the commoner's stock, but the more recent trends are towards conservation and maintaining the bog habitats. Ditches that are "too wide" fill themselves in, as can be seen here. This area will flood during wetter times. In the distance are the trees of Woodfidley, and the line of silver birches on the right mark the railway mainline.
