Title
Dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A copper-alloy dragonesque brooch dating from c. 75-175AD (Worrall, Roman Brooch Timeline). The S shaped body of the brooch has a central, circular depression, probably for enamel, though the enamel is now missing. Each terminal of the brooch divides into two arms; one arm ends in a circle of metal decorated with a single dot within an incised ring, the other arm is an elongated leaf-shape with three incised lines running outwards from a raised central spine at an angle of 45 degrees. One terminal is connected to the centre of the brooch by a short piece of metal to form a closed loop; the other terminal is open. It is 33.6mm in length, 15.9mm wide, and 3.3mm thick. It weighs 3.51gm. The pin is missing. The reverse is slightly hollow. For a parallel see Hattat’s Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, p. 351, No. 1655.
