Title |
Dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Roman dragonesque brooch. This brooch is flat and ‘s’ shaped. It has broken ends and a convex centre. The decoration is substantial consisting of cells filled with enamel though very little of the enamel survives. A transverse rectangle across the middle of the brooch contains three diamond shaped cells within. Either side of the rectangular feature are two semi circles forming an ‘m’. These contain surviving yellow enamel. Then a line from between these to the ends of the brooch divides each end of the brooch into two cells. There is also a knop, broken off half way along one side at the thickest section. This would have been where the “head” of the dragon rested its chin on its chest. Both the head and foot are missing. The reverse is slightly hollowed at each end and has a glossy light green patina. The pin which would have wrapped round the neck of the beast is missing. An example of this type of brooch is in ‘A visual catalogue of Richard Hattatt’s ancient brooches’, p.351. It measures 34.7mm x 14.3mm x 3.3mm, weighing 5.8g. Dragonesque brooches date from the 2nd century: 75-175 AD. |
