Title |
Dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: Roman Dragonesque brooch. This brooch is essentially Celtic in design. The brooch has a flat front surface and the overall form is that of and ‘S’ shaped double-headed animal with large ears and a curled snout. Each head has a raised curcular eye and there is a large circular domed boss in the centre of the brooch surrounded on each side by a trumpet coil decoration. Looped around the neck of the upper head there is a copper alloy pin. Where the pin is twisted around the neck it is flat in section but has a circular section further down before tapering to a point. The pin has quite an exaggerated curve which according to Johns (1996) would have been to enable it to pass through quite a thick fold of cloth before being hooked under the other neck. The pin appears to have been made from a different composition of copper alloy from the brooch as it is darker in colour. The reverse of the brooch has a slight hollow in the middle. These brooches were possibly worn in pairs like other forms of Roman brooch. The brooch weighs 12.06g and measures 49.19mm in length (without pin), 73.9mm (including pin), 19.3mm in width and 6.66mm in thickness. |
