English: This historic 1973 image depicted Dr. Michael McGinnis seated in his mycology laboratory, while he was in the process of transferring a culture.
In 1980, Dr. McGinnis authored a text entitled, Laboratory Handbook of Medical Mycology, which became a seminal text for the development of the future of mycological study. An expert in taxonomic classification, Dr. McGinnis defined the clinical nomenclature identifying nine fungal species pathogenic towards humans from the genera Exophiala, Phialophora, and Wangiella.
