ecorded facts rela-tive to the disease which bears his name.Appendicitis and duodenal ulcer had oc-curred for centuries before McBurneyand Moynihan described their symptomsand surgical treatment. In the same way,the disease which Raynaud described hadbeen observed many years before. Mon-ro narrates that Lachmond (1676) haspreserved for us a narrative of a curiouscase met with by Bernhard Schraderwhen the latter, as a student of surgery,was travelling in 1629 with his brothelJohn and a companion named AlexanderLax. The three put up at an inn in aplace called Geest, and there they foundthat the daughter of their host, a girl oftwenty-three, suffered every month fromconsiderable pain in her fingers and toes June, 1920. That which survived of the affect-ed parts retained its natural form andappearance.
