English: Written on verso: To Dr Barnum with regards of John W. Crane, Paris, 24 Sep 1875, 7 Rue Scribe.

In 1840, Dr. Crane, a well respected dentist in the U.S. and Europe, became embroiled in a controversy for refusing to subscribe to a new publication The American Journal of Dental Science as he believed that any professional dentist should have a medical degree, M.D., but none of the editorial staff dentists had that degree. Dr. Crane was elected to the Office of Secretary of the American Dental Society of Europe, in September 1878.
