so widely popular. Dr. Gulick, in summing up his contribution to physicaltraining in the Associations, credits Roberts with havingdeveloped a distinctive style of gymnastic work w^hich isexceedingly simple, is attractive, can be operated in largeclasses, is effective in relation to the vital functions ofdigestion, circulation, and respiration, and which can besuccessfully taught by teachers of mediocre ability. Thewholesome and helpful personality of the man, his unswerv-ing loyalty to his own platform, and the enthusiasm forright living with which he inspires his classes have madehim a notable figure among his colleagues. The HealthHints and other short articles published from time to time, chiefly in the Young Mens Era and other Associationorgans, have been lay sermons on his one text, hygienicbody-building. Among other inventions and improve-ments in gymnasium equipment, we owe to him the indoorshot, the medicine ball, the thin felt mattress, and the feltand canvas running track. 81
